Sodium Chloride Snow Melters: An Important Choice for Winter Road Snow Removal

Sodium chloride, as the most common chloride-based snow melter, has become a traditional choice for road snow removal in winter thanks to its low cost and wide applicability. Its snow-melting principle is to form a brine solution through dissolution, which lowers the freezing point to -21℃, thereby breaking the ice-snow structure to achieve melting. It works effectively in the temperature range of -1℃ to -10℃.

1.Application Advantages of Sodium Chloride Snow Melter

  • Low Cost
Sodium chloride is a salt widely found in nature, with relatively low extraction and production costs. This gives sodium chloride snow melter a significant price advantage, making it the first choice for winter road snow removal in many regions. For instance, some cities in northern China use large quantities of sodium chloride snow melter in winter, ensuring the smooth flow of urban roads at a low cost.
  • Easy to Use
Sodium chloride snow melter usually exists in solid granular form, which is easy to store, transport and spread. During snowy weather, workers can spread sodium chloride evenly on roads using professional spreading equipment or manual spreading. Its granular form is not easy to fly during spreading, reducing pollution to the surrounding environment and air.
  • Significant Snow-Melting Effect
In moderate-temperature winter environments (e.g., around -10℃), sodium chloride snow melter can quickly melt ice and snow, restoring road traffic capacity. It has a fast snow-melting speed—usually, obvious snow-melting effects can be seen within 10-15 minutes after spreading. This improves snow removal efficiency to a certain extent and reduces the time roads are covered with snow and ice.

2.Recommendations for the Use of Sodium Chloride Snow Melter

  • Reasonably Control the Dosage
When using sodium chloride snow melter, the spreading amount should be reasonably controlled according to the snowfall and temperature conditions. Generally, a suitable dosage is 20-30 grams of sodium chloride snow melter per square meter of road surface. Excessive use not only causes waste of resources but also increases harm to the environment and infrastructure.
  • Choose the Appropriate Spreading Timing
Priority should be given to spreading sodium chloride snow melter in advance when the snow depth reaches 2-3 cm. Utilize its "anti-icing" property to prevent snow from freezing and adhering to the ground, making subsequent cleaning easier.
  • Strengthen Environmental Protection Measures
When spreading sodium chloride snow melter, efforts should be made to prevent it from entering sensitive areas such as green belts and rivers. For areas close to buildings, avoid corrosion of the walls and windows of buildings by the snow melter. After snow melting, residual snow melter on the road should be cleaned up in a timely manner to reduce potential harm to the environment.
