Ammonium bicarbonate is a white compound, commonly referred to as “carbon ammonium” (or “carbonate ammonium”), with the chemical formula \text{NH}_4\text{HCO}_3 . It appears as granular, tabular, or columnar crystals and has an ammonia odor. It is a chemically unstable substance that readily decomposes into ammonia gas, water, and carbon dioxide when heated. Its molecular weight is 79.055, and the theoretical nitrogen content is 17.72%. [3-4]Ammonium bicarbonate is a carbonate, so it must never be stored together with acids. This is because acids will react with ammonium bicarbonate to produce carbon dioxide, causing the ammonium bicarbonate to deteriorate.
